Staring at the door that separated the two of them, William contemplated the choices he’d made that day. His stomach churned with the acid that had built up there.

Helping her with the partition for Davey had been no problem. Letting her have her way with the merchandise had been no problem. Sending the letter to her sister…that was what was preventing him from feeling at ease now.

After draining a glass of milk, he felt a little better, but he wondered if sleep would come tonight. He’d mailed the letter with no regret, but now, after it was too late to do anything, he wondered at the wisdom of it. Alex was so grateful to him, and Davey had been no trouble at all the whole day long. Would it really be so hard to accept the boy?

Little thoughts taunted him. “He’s not your son.” “He doesn’t belong with you.” “You can never love him enough.”

He knew well enough that these were remnants from his past and that he shouldn’t apply them to his present situation, but there was no help for it. His past had formed him into the man he was today and there was nothing he could do about it. If only he had some way to erase his memory, he might be able to accept Davy’s presence in his life, and maybe even one-day treat him like a son. But since no such method existed, he was going to have to persist in what he started. If he didn’t hear from Mindy within a month, he would send another letter, and then another until she answered. The boy didn’t belong here, and he didn’t want him here.

That had to be the truth.
